I love visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake in the summer. The town is beautiful, and the stores and restaurants there are all so unique. With the exception of good ol’ Starbucks on the main street. So when my parents asked where Lisa and I wanted to go for our birthday lunch (did you remember that I have a twin?), I suggested Afternoon Tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel, right in the heart of the town. It’s a beautiful Victorian style hotel built in 1864, originally named The Arcade Hotel. In 1901 the hotel was renamed Prince of Wales in honour of the Duke and Duchess of York’s visit that same year (better known today as King George V and Queen Mary).
Afternoon Tea is served in The Drawing Room from 12 pm to 5 pm. We arrived at 2:00 and were seated by the fireplace at the far end of the room. It was the perfect location because it felt private, but we still could see the entire room.
First we selected our teas. The hotel has an extensive selection of teas available. I wish I could try them all!
Lisa, Mom and I ordered Heavenly Cream, which is similar to a vanilla Earl Grey, and Dad had Masala Chai Classic. Both were delicious!
By the time we were finished we were all stuffed! I couldn’t even finish the pastries no matter how much I wanted to. But I did have a taste of each one.
Afterwards we decided to take a walk down Queen Street in hopes of working off the meal. Of course we were tempted to go into the many stores along street. Some of my favourites include Silver Screen (a movie and merchandise store), Scottish Loft (filled with British movies, tv shows, and food) and Maple Leaf Fudge (all the fudge you could ever want). We also went in to a store called Hatley, which specializes in all sorts of hats. I’ve never been much of a hat person, but I actually found one that I fell in love with and ended up purchasing.
We ended the day with a walk along the lake. There were quite a few families there having BBQs or simply relaxing and enjoying the scenery. And what’s amazing is that even though it’s about two hours away, you can still see the Toronto skyline. I really should have taken a photo of the skyline, but I was so taken with the fact that I could see it that I completely forgot!
So that about wraps up our birthday in Niagara-on-the-Lake. I hope you all are enjoying this summer weather.
